Too Late To Be Gracious: A Terribly Unsubtle Boone/Shannon Mix

I'm feeling really nostalgic for season one of Lost! But not enough to like, watch it, or anything. But I have been talking to [info]soda_and_capes about Locke/Boone and Boone/Shannon, and it reminded me of this. Which is a fanmix I made when I was about fourteen and never shared with anyone ever because I was embarrassed of it!

You will notice that this is entirely from the male POV! I was struggling with some wacky internalised sexism issues at the time, where I hated everything feminine. I still had women and female characters that I loved, but anything girly disgusted me for a few years there.

An exercise in reading against the text

Hello, internet! It is time to talk about "Homosexuality: Legitimate, Alternate DEATHSTYLE", the comic that makes Jack Chick look like Alan Moore! (If I ever form a metal band, I will call it ALTERNATE DEATHSTYLE. In capslock.)

If you haven't encountered this before, it's an anti-gay comic from the eighties. It is (clearly) the opposite of politically correct. It is also kind of hilarious. I haven't laughed this much at a comic since the time the Secret Six hijacked an ice cream truck and drove it to Vegas.

Part One and Part Two

[info]cws_eat_chs and I have decided that the Narrator is closeted and dating the Tall Gay Man. How else does he know so much about gay sex? Why else is Tall Gay Man following them around? (TGM deserves better, but he has self esteem issues. And I quote: "Yeah...it IS degrading. But you kind of get used to it.")

Also the Short Angry Man is clearly a grown-up Charlie Brown. Do Patty and Marcie know you're listening to this bullshit, Chuck? (There is also a guy in a BDSM club who I am convinced is Nelson Gardner and a guy in an orgy who looks like the Master. COMEDY GOLD.)

I love this game! It was the one Stupid Game Middle-Schoolers Play that I actually enjoyed/participated in. (Truth or Dare terrified me. And the other major one was "Who Would You Go Gay For?" which I didn't like playing for, um, obvious reasons.)

The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but really we know nothing about one another. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

This is funny because most of my RL friends read my LJ. Like, [info]qahtte has known me for twelve years. I don't think there are things she doesn't know about me.

ASK ME ANYTHING, I'm bored/procrastinating, as usual.

OTP Meme

Everybody else is doing this, so I guess I should too.

Comment with a fandom and I will tell you my:

+ OTP
+ Runner-up
+ Honorable mention(s)
+ Crack pairing(s)
+ Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't

Basically, everything counts as a fandom. Give me more than one, if you want! I wanna talk about pairings I like! (Although, depending on the fandom, you might get "EVERYONE/EVERYONE ELSE" as a response.)

A Couple Sketches

So I've signed up for [info]yuletart, which I think overall was a good idea but is causing me stupid amounts of "Aaaaagh what if I can't draw and people just say I can to be nice?!!" anxiety. (Stupid brain chemistry...) Some of the fandoms I said I could draw for are things I either haven't drawn in years or haven't drawn ever, so I've been working on that before I get my assignment. By mid-October everything I own is gonna be covered in Nightmare Before Christmas characters...

Okay, enough procrastination, I should actually do some homework now. (It will probably not get done at ALL.)

Happiness, Day 7: The Internets

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

THE INTERNET has made me happy today. Here are some portions of the internet of which I am particularly fond at the moment:

* Following Gail Simone on twitter is an extremely surreal experience. A gem from today: "I would like American Idol better if each contestant had to play human Tetris on the face of the sun. But it would be a very different show."

* Science has found a Tiny T-Rex! The article is all about how this changes everything about how we thought they evolved, which is all very well, but does not talk about the possibility of cloning one from DNA trapped in amber and keeping a miniature T-Rex as a pet.

* Kitten War: May The Cutest Kitten Win! This is basically instant happiness for cat-less cat people. SO MANY KITTENS. Eugh, I miss my kitty, even though he was never really mine and he hasn't lived here in a year. WHY DOES MY MOTHER HATE CATS, eugh my life is just so complex.

* The Serenada Schizophrana website plays the entire thing! I had never heard it before and it is a gorgeous piece of music. (I just want Danny Elfman to score my life, okay. Well, and Colleen Atwood to design my wardrobe? Okay, so maybe I want to be a character in a Tim Burton movie, shut up.)

Happiness, Day 6

Roots of Modern Culture: The Modern Period (Circa 1500-1900)! This is the class I had this evening. It is kiiind of amazing. Basically, IL all the material a ridiculous amount? Today's lecture was on Galileo and Francis Bacon, it was pretty great, the prof remembered to mention that Galileo was actually wrong and Kepler was right, and that there are people who think that Bacon wrote the works of Shakespeare (my notes on this point are just "lol, Baconians.")

Also we talked about the Spanish Inquisition, for which my notes say "Then the Inquisition happened. It was unexpected." This is why I don't lend people my notes! My notes are ridiculous.

I am technically not enrolled in this class, on account of my school is a bitch, but the prof told me who to talk to to correct this. (It's great, I got the kindly older Jewish guy prof! I always seem to have good rapport with them, possibly because it is like talking to my dad.)

* My mom finally found a bushel of tomatoes yesterday (there's a shortage), so I had fresh salsa and fresh tomato sauce today!
* Last night's Would I Lie To You. I love ridiculous British panel quizzes, you guys!
* THIS. I literally cannot stop laughing! I hope to god the casting rumours are true, the world absolutely needs more Satan!Danny.

We'll punch you in the gizzard if you dare to call us "Bingo"

I have not, actually, been all that happy today! I didn't get enough sleep last night, and then (possibly as a result) I've had a headache most of the day.

But, I have committed myself to this. So!

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

LET'S TALK ABOUT OINGO BOINGO. I sometimes forget they are my favourite band! I haven't really been listening to them much lately! But today I was sitting on the subway, fighting off this headache and trying to focus on reading Ibsen, when "Nothing to Fear" came up on shuffle and then I was grinning and making Danny Hands and then, uh, people were looking at me funny? WHATEVER.

Videos + Blather )
...Yeah, I am definitely happier than I was when I started writing this post.

Happiness Meme, Day 3

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

Saw 9! It is really gorgeous, and I say that as someone who's not particularly fond of computer animation. The character and set designs are all amazing, and the textures are fucking perfect. I couldn't get over how much 9's zipper looked like an actual zipper. I would say it is about on par with James and the Giant Peach, overall. I love all the characters ridiculous amounts (well, not particularly 1, but even he had his moments), although I wish 2 had had more screentime.

I think it's a very good thing to teach kids about the dangers of self-replicating AIs at an early age. Kids watching this movie right now might actually be in a position where "Don't build an intelligent robot that can reproduce itself" could be a useful lesson someday! ...Uh, I might possibly read too much SF. But this really is something I worry about, okay!

It is, though, a lot sadder than most PG-rated films! This is a warning for anyone considering taking a small child to see it.

Um. I am possibly considering a paper comparing 9 to Frankenstein? They are about the dangers of science! I'm studying Frankenstein in Roots of Modern Culture this year, so it might be a legitimate essay topic.

Happiness: Secret Six #13

I think, when I am less tired, I'm going to draw Bella eating and Bella with an animal for the picspam-meme. But not now. Now I am going to talk about happy things!

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

SECRET SIX. Okay, everybody who cares has probably read this already, but I just got this week's comics, so. My boss: "Do you always giggle when you read your comics? ...Oh, it's Secret Six." It is absolutely my favourite thing DC is publishing right now, and that includes Tiny Titans. Ragdoll is never not funny. And Scandal Savage made # 7 on my top 10 female comics characters ever, but this issue made me want to bump her up a place or two. (Also it made me seriously consider cosplaying as her? Eugh, but her costume would take, like, effort and stuff.)

Basically what I want to say is, everybody should be reading Secret Six. It's horrible and depraved and still has a sense of humour. I'm particularly fond of the issue where they hijack an ice-cream truck and drive it to Vegas. And the villain reveal at the end of the first ongoing arc. And the Tiny Titans parody. And, okay, everything. If you like hilarious comics about terrible people doing terrible things, you should definitely be buying this book.
bellatrix the strange, house of black, sanity is overrated, hairbrushes are for muggles

(no subject)

I have some drawings to scan, but they are kind of crappy on account of being drawn entirely on buses and subways. Also it is around midnight and I am really tired. The kind of tired where you don't really want to sleep, but you can't do anything else of use. Do other people get that, or is it just me?

[info]colonize tagged me with Bellatrix for that picspam-meme, but I couldn't find all the pictures. I might have to draw some of them myself, is that cheating?

Anyway, the point is, I can't do that meme right now, so I'm gonna do this one instead:

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

* The episode of Merlin S1 with Lancelot in! And subsequent flaily conversations about Arthurian legend with [info]cws_eat_chs. I've been a diehard Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot shipper since the summer I was eight or so and read twelve different Arthur cycles in two months. Including Mists of Avalon. Yeah.

* The year's first Critical Sexualities class! This basically involved a lot of rude words. You've not lived until you've had a prof make a room full of students say "Cocksucker" in unison. Also, one of my friends who doesn't live in Toronto is in this class, and I hadn't seen him since spring.

* Finally finished Tamora Pierce's Terrier! When I'm depressed I find it really hard to finish books. I've started that one at least twice. And now I'm done! There is nothing like finishing a really good book. Even if I did guess who the murderer was pretty early on.

Eggplant Batgirl

Since it seems to be the thing that everyone is talking about: Steph's new costume.

Now, I like this costume! I had no idea people didn't like Steph's utility garter, it's one of my favourite costume elements. It's unique and practical. The low-slung belt isn't particularly practical, but it's cool enough that I'll let that go. And it looks like her boots have steel toes! I've been saying Steph should have steel-toed boots for years, I think they'd be good for her.

I love the colour scheme. It reminds me of Spoiler, obviously, but also of some of Huntress' better costumes. And, of course, the cut is very similar to Barbara's classic Batgirl costume. I would have included more of Cass' design elements, though. Maybe the hollow logo.

I have to say, I was hoping for something more reminiscent of Steph's Robin costume, though. Kind of an updated Betty Kane Bat-Girl, in eggplant of course. I like the skirt-over-tights look.

...Okay, I have to go trek up to school now. And this is as long as I can talk about Steph-as-Batgirl without getting into incoherent capslock with lots of exclamation marks. Steph! In her own title! As a legitimate member of the Batfamily! (I'm still a little worried, to be honest. We all know what happened last time Steph got a promotion.)

Here in Canada, we really really like Margaret Atwood. Like, really. And, based on her actual writing, that's fair! Her books say some very interesting and important things!

But then she speaks, and, well.

I mean, I've been annoyed at Atwood since the time she decided she didn't write sci-fi, because her book had no space ships in and therefore it was "literature." But this-! Here are the things I have learned from this interview:

- Women have to pick up after our husbands because they're hunters and we're gatherers, so they can't see socks on the floor!

- The women in Handmaid's Tale aren't oppressed!

- Science doesn't kill rainforests, people do!

- People go to Toronto to cuddle bears because of Winnie the Pooh!
